Why Tatev

In the south of Armenia, in the heart of the Syunik region, rises the Tatev Monastery — a spiritual beacon, a symbol of faith, and a source of inspiration for centuries. This unique monument of medieval architecture, included in the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List, is not only an important part of Armenian culture but also has the potential to become a global center of attraction for tourists and pilgrims.

Founded in the 9th century, Tatev Monastery is one of the most significant spiritual, cultural, and historical centers of Armenia. For centuries, it served as the residence of the Syunik Diocese and played a central role in the religious life of the region. Beyond its religious importance, Tatev became a stronghold of Armenian identity, especially during periods of political instability, preserving traditions, manuscripts, and spiritual heritage.

Throughout its history, Tatev endured invasions, earthquakes, and periods of decline, yet remained a symbol of resilience and continuity.

Tatev University: a cradle of knowledge and intellectual tradition

Tatev Monastery was not only a spiritual center but also one of the most important educational institutions of medieval Armenia. Founded in the 14th century, Tatev University became a leading intellectual hub where theology, philosophy, sciences, manuscript copying, and the arts were studied. At a time when knowledge in the region was under threat, Tatev became a beacon of scholarship, preserving Armenian thought, language, and cultural identity.

Scholars, theologians, and thinkers gathered in Tatev, turning it into a center of innovation and intellectual exchange. It played a key role in shaping the spiritual and academic life of Armenia, continuing the traditions of earlier centers such as Gladzor University and ensuring the transmission of knowledge from generation to generation. Within its walls, manuscripts were created, ideas were debated, and a vision of a sustainable, educated nation was nurtured.

Here, spirituality, education, and nature came together in harmony — creating a unique environment that became a true cradle of Armenian civilization, where faith inspired knowledge, and knowledge strengthened identity.

Why now?

Peace and the choice we make

The world is going through one of the most difficult periods in its history. We see destroyed cities, broken destinies, and the loss of human lives. Fear, pain, and division are becoming ever more tangible.

Amid this growing noise, it is especially important not to lose sight of what matters most. To remember, as Ruben Vardanyan wrote:

“Evil cannot be answered with evil — it only grows, becoming stronger and wider.”

Why now?

Tatev as a place of strength and memory

A pilgrimage to Tatev Monastery is more than a journey to a historical site. It is a return to spiritual roots and eternal values. For centuries, Tatev has remained a place where faith, knowledge, and identity were preserved even in the hardest times.

Today, as the world faces uncertainty, division, and loss, the importance of such places becomes especially clear. Pilgrimage offers a chance to pause, reflect, and restore connection — with faith, with history, and with one another.

Why now?

A path inward and toward the future

This path is not about the external. This pilgrimage is a journey inward — a path toward the future we are responsible for leaving to our children: a future of peace, a space of strength and light where they can love, create, live, and leave their mark.

Today, more than ever, Tatev becomes a symbol of resilience and renewal. After war and forced displacement, when communities are rebuilding their lives and seeking support, pilgrimage gains special meaning — as an act of unity and healing. It brings together people of different countries and generations, reminding us of what truly matters: faith, humanity, and the preservation of our shared heritage.

By coming to Tatev, we not only honor the past — we shape a future grounded in strength of spirit, compassion, and continuity.

Pilgrimage 2026

In 2026, the route will include three holy sites: the Great Hermitage of Tatev, Vorotnavank, and the “Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Savior / Hazaraprkich)” Church in Svarants — as spiritual “steps” that help reveal Tatev not only as a destination, but as a living center and system.

The Great Hermitage of Tatev offers an experience of silence and inner gathering; Vorotnavank reminds us of the connection to Tatev’s spiritual and educational tradition and the vardapet (scholarly-clerical) heritage; Svarants and the “Azaraprkich” Church become a sign of a reviving community, where alongside the shrine a new district is being built for forcibly displaced families from Artsakh, and where village life is gaining new breath.

Each stop follows a unified and simple structure: prayer, a brief account of the site’s history, and 1–2 hymns; and the journey concludes with a shared gathering at Tatev Monastery in a united communal prayer.

Goals of the 2026 Pilgrimage:

Returning humanity to the heart

To restore love, humanity, generosity, and compassion within our hearts.

A prayer for peace without division

To ask for peace for the living and pray for the souls of all those who have died in the wars of our time — without borders and without dividing people into “us” and “them.”

Responsibility to future generations

To recognize that we are obliged to pass on to our children a world filled with light, love, and humanity.

A prayer for the release of captives

To pray for all those unlawfully held in captivity and ask for their swift release.

Pilgrimage is action

Each year, participants support real projects in the region. In 2026 — the creation of a children’s space.

Pilgrimage as a commitment to meaningful action

Each year, the pilgrimage to Tatev Monastery is not only a spiritual journey but also a commitment to meaningful action. United by shared values, we dedicate this time to good deeds — supporting the local community and contributing to its long-term prosperity.

Together, we raise funds for initiatives we believe in: preserving heritage, creating opportunities, and strengthening the region’s future. In this way, the pilgrimage becomes not only a path of faith, but also a force for renewal and positive change.

What has already become life

In previous pilgrimages, we did more than just walk the path — together we planted a garden and became the Roos Guardians. Everything created together gives life.

We invite you to take the next step in the tradition of pilgrimage to Tatev — to join in creating the children’s playground “The Living Hive of Tatev.”

“The Living Hive of Tatev”

The project envisions the creation of an integrated play space located in public fruit gardens near the Halidzor station of the “Wings of Tatev” cableway.

The playground will be fully open and accessible to everyone, serving both local children and visiting families. The design will be based on the theme of bees and honey production, reflecting the biodiversity of Syunik and the traditional culture of beekeeping.

What will be created:

A play and educational space

An open area for children and families

A meeting point for locals and visitors
